Learning to drive in Aldgate
The old one-way system was dismantled in stages, with the western side closing permanently in 2015 to create Aldgate Square. Traffic now runs two-way, with segregated cycle routes and busy pedestrian crossings, so observation and patience matter more than speed.
Whitechapel High Street, just east, is the start of Cycleway 2 towards Stratford, and Commercial Road heads off towards Limehouse. Buses, vans, cyclists and office workers all compete for space, especially at rush hour.
Aldgate sits right on the edge of the Congestion Charge zone, so once you pass, it's worth checking TfL's map before driving west. If you work in the City and want lessons around your hours, evening and weekend slots are available in manual or automatic.
