Manual Driving Lessons in London

In a manual car you control the clutch and gear stick yourself, so lessons spend extra time on clutch control, gear changes, hill starts and stalling recovery. An automatic car has no clutch or gear stick, so lessons focus purely on road positioning, hazard awareness and manoeuvres. The test routes and standard are identical either way — the difference is entirely in the car.

DVSA guidance puts the national average at around 45 hours of professional tuition for a manual licence, plus roughly 20 hours of private practice, though this varies a lot by age and prior experience. Confident learners with some private practice often reach test standard well below that; nervous learners or those without private practice sometimes need more. Your instructor will give you an honest estimate once they've seen a few lessons.

The test itself — routes, manoeuvres and marking — is identical for manual and automatic. What differs is the national pass rate: manual tests currently pass at a higher rate than automatic tests, largely because the automatic candidate pool includes more retests and learners who found manual coordination difficult. Passing in a manual simply means one extra skill (the clutch) to master before test day.

A full manual licence, which lets you drive both manual and automatic cars — including automatics and every electric vehicle, since EVs have no gearbox. Passing in an automatic only entitles you to drive automatics (a 'code 78' restriction), so a manual licence keeps every option open for life.
