Learning to drive in West Ham
If you want to drive for the school run, passed years ago and let your confidence slip, or have just moved into one of the newer flats and don't know the roads yet, lessons here are paced around you. We teach manual and automatic, with evening and weekend slots.
Since November 2024 the streets around West Ham Park have been a low traffic neighbourhood, and in February 2026 the council confirmed it will stay. Camera-enforced filters on Ham Park Road, Vicarage Road and Tavistock Road stop through traffic, so sat-nav shortcuts across the area no longer work. That traffic now runs on the main roads, where bus lanes and busy junctions keep you on your toes.
The Victorian and Edwardian terraces around Plaistow and West Ham Park are often lined with parked cars, so giving way, finding passing places and pulling out safely between vehicles come up constantly. They're good roads for building control at low speed.
On match and event days, roads near London Stadium close, and across the West Ham parking zone only permit holders or paid bays can be used between 8am and 9pm. It's nothing to worry about, but it's worth knowing when you book, and later when you're driving yourself. Signs at the entrance to each zone show the next event date. Checking what's on before setting off is a good habit anywhere near the Olympic Park.
