Learning to drive in Bow
What sets Bow Roundabout apart is the cyclists. Low-level cycle signals were added in 2014, along with early-start areas where bikes move off before other traffic, so you learn to read the signals carefully and expect cyclists ahead of you when the lights change. Stratford High Street, just to the east, uses a similar layout.
Away from the A11, Bow is mostly Victorian streets, conservation areas and the busy shopping stretch of Roman Road, whose market has been running since the 1840s. Stalls, deliveries and shoppers make it good practice for slow, careful driving, while Victoria Park along the northern edge gives the area plenty of quieter residential roads.
Road layouts here have changed more than once in recent years. Tower Hamlets has added and removed street closures under its Liveable Streets programme, including taking out a camera filter on Antill Road in 2022, so a shortcut someone remembers may not exist any more. Reading the signs in front of you, rather than relying on memory, is a habit that pays off in Bow.
If you're nervous, just tell us. Plenty of learners are, and lessons go at your pace. Bow is also home to a lot of people who commute into town and need lessons that fit around work, so we teach manual and automatic with evening and weekend slots.
