Driving Lessons in Stratford

If someone learned to drive in Stratford before 2018, the town centre they practised on no longer exists. The one-way gyratory is now two-way, Cycleway 2 runs along Stratford High Street, and parts of the Stratford Park area are closed to through traffic. We teach on the roads as they are today, across E15 and E20 in East London.

Learning to drive in Stratford

Start with the layout. Since October 2018 traffic has run both ways around Broadway, the High Street and the Romford Road junctions, with signalised cycle crossings added. Old sat-navs, and advice from anyone who drove the one-way loop, can send you the wrong way, so getting lane choice right here is worth the time.

There's a good mix of roads within a short drive. The terraced streets around Maryland are low-speed and quiet, Romford Road and Leyton Road carry steady main-road traffic and bus lanes, and the A11 and Bow Interchange are where you meet faster traffic joining from slip roads. Your instructor picks from these to suit where you're at.

Cyclists take some getting used to. On Stratford High Street the cycle track is separated from traffic and even runs behind the bus stops, but it still crosses every side road. Checking your mirror and blind spot before turning left off the High Street is a habit worth building, because that's where bikes come up on your inside.

The Stratford Park low traffic neighbourhood matters once you're driving on your own. Camera-enforced filters, like the one on Aldworth Road, stop cars cutting through the residential streets, and driving through one means a fine. Spotting the signs early is part of learning to read the road ahead.

Not everyone who books with us in Stratford is starting from scratch. Some passed years ago and haven't driven since, and a town centre rebuilt around them is a good reason for a few refresher lessons. Others have just moved into East Village or the new blocks by the Olympic Park and want to know the local roads before driving them alone. And if you're nervous, that's completely normal. Plenty of our learners are, and we go at a pace that suits you.

Many of our Stratford learners are students at UEL or UCL East, or work shifts and commute from the flats around the Olympic Park, so lessons need to fit around a busy week. We teach manual and automatic, including evenings and weekends.

FAQs

Driving lessons in Stratford — FAQs

Which test centre is closest to Stratford?

Wanstead is the usual choice. Its routes include the Green Man and Redbridge roundabouts, where lane and exit choice matter most, and your instructor will make sure you're comfortable with roundabouts like these. If Wanstead dates are hard to get, Goodmayes and Chingford are the alternatives.

What's parking like in Stratford on event days?

When there's a match or event at London Stadium or the Olympic Park, Stratford's resident parking zones switch to event-day rules: between 8am and 9pm you need a permit or a paid bay. It doesn't stop lessons, but it's handy to know once you're driving yourself, and signs at each zone entrance show the next event date.

Do low traffic neighbourhoods affect driving lessons in Stratford?

Only in that some residential streets can't be driven through. Spotting the Stratford Park filter signs is part of what you'll pick up, so you won't get caught out with a fine after you pass.

I passed years ago but haven't driven since. Can you help?

Yes. Refresher lessons focus on whatever you want to feel comfortable with again, whether that's the two-way town centre, faster roads like the A12, or simply getting your confidence back. There's more on our refresher lessons page.

Do you offer automatic driving lessons in Stratford?

Yes, across E15 and E20. Automatic suits a lot of people who'll mostly drive in town traffic, but bear in mind an automatic licence doesn't let you drive manual cars.

How much are driving lessons in Stratford?

Manual and automatic lessons are £40 an hour pay as you go, or £38.50 an hour when you block-book 10 or more hours. Packages and intensive courses are on our prices page.
