Learning to drive in Leyton
High Road Leyton is a proper test of patience: shops, bus stops, people crossing between parked cars and traffic that stops and starts the whole way along. It's where observation and anticipation become second nature. Lea Bridge Road is different again. Waltham Forest has built a fully protected cycle track along it, Cycleway 23, so you get used to cyclists at side roads and junctions designed with bikes in mind.
The terraced side streets have their own challenge. With cars parked on both sides they often narrow to room for one moving car, so knowing when to wait and when to go is something you pick up quickly here. Towards Leytonstone, some streets sit inside a low traffic neighbourhood, with filters that stop through traffic.
Leyton is popular with people moving to East London for the Central line and the terraces, and many arrive able to drive but not used to driving here. A few refresher lessons on local roads can make a real difference. If you're starting out and feeling nervous, that's normal too. Your instructor won't rush you onto busier roads before you're ready.
Most Leyton learners test at Wanstead, where the routes include the Green Man and Redbridge roundabouts. Chingford, to the north, is the other option, known for Charlie Brown's Roundabout on the North Circular. Both involve big multi-lane roundabouts, which are worth feeling confident on before test day.
