After Your Test

What is Pass Plus?

Pass Plus is a DVSA-registered training course for new drivers, usually taken soon after passing your test. New drivers are statistically most at risk in their first two years, and the standard learner syllabus can't fully cover motorways, night driving or poor weather. Pass Plus fills those gaps in a dual-control car with an ADI-approved instructor.

There's no test at the end. You earn a certificate once your instructor is satisfied you've met the standard, and many insurers recognise it with a discount on new-driver premiums.

The Course

The 6 Pass Plus modules

Each module is signed off by your instructor. Complete all six and the certificate is yours.

1

Motorway Driving

Lane discipline, merging and high-speed safety on the motorway.

2

Night Driving

Driving safely in reduced visibility and handling headlight dazzle.

3

All-Weather Driving

Proper techniques for rain, fog and other adverse conditions.

4

Dual Carriageways

Confidence on fast A-roads and dual carriageways outside urban areas.

5

Town Driving

Advanced hazard perception and decision-making in busy urban traffic.

6

Rural Roads

Country roads, tight bends and unpredictable rural scenarios.

How It Works

What the 6 hours look like

Take it in one go, or split it into two 3-hour or three 2-hour sessions — agreed with your instructor.

Local roads and town driving

Advanced hazard perception: reading traffic flow, anticipating hazards and decision-making at busy junctions.

Dual carriageways and A-roads

Building confidence at speed: joining, safe overtaking and lane discipline.

Motorway driving

Joining, lane changing, dealing with lorries and exiting safely — the module most learners book for.

Night and weather conditions

Night techniques where timing allows, or adverse-weather work: glare, reduced visibility and wet-road handling.

Is It For You?

Is Pass Plus right for you?

An honest look — it isn't for everyone.

Worth it if you…

  • Want to feel genuinely confident driving independently
  • Have been avoiding motorways because they feel daunting
  • Want to reduce your first-year insurance, where your insurer offers a discount
  • Will be driving at night or in bad weather
  • Need to drive for work and want professional training

Maybe wait if you…

  • Won't be driving for months — do it when you'll use the skills
  • Your insurer doesn't offer a Pass Plus discount (check first)
  • Already drive motorways regularly and feel confident
  • Only drive locally and rarely need motorway or A-road skills
Who Takes Pass Plus

Confidence for every kind of new driver

The new passer

Just passed and want real confidence before driving alone, especially on motorways and at night.

The commuter

Need to drive for work and want to feel comfortable on A-roads and motorways at rush hour.

The parent

Want to be as safe as possible before driving with your family on board.

The insurance saver

First-year premiums are high and every discount counts — check whether your insurer rewards Pass Plus.

Insurance

Pass Plus and your insurance

Participating insurers may offer a discount to drivers holding a Pass Plus certificate, which matters most for new drivers facing the highest premiums. Not every insurer takes part, and discounts vary, so check with your chosen insurer before booking. The DVSA website lists participating insurers.

Claiming is simple: tick the Pass Plus box when you get quotes and give the certificate number from your DVSA certificate.

FAQs

Pass Plus — FAQs

What is Pass Plus?

Pass Plus is a DVSA-registered training course for newly qualified drivers. It covers six real-world modules the standard learner syllabus only touches on: town driving, all-weather driving, rural roads, night driving, dual carriageways and motorways.

Is Pass Plus a test? Can I fail?

No. Pass Plus is a training course, not a test, so there's no pass or fail. Your instructor assesses your progress across all six modules and issues your certificate once you've reached the required standard.

How long is the Pass Plus course?

The course is a minimum of 6 hours. It can be taken in one go or split into two 3-hour or three 2-hour sessions, whichever suits you — just agree it with your instructor.

Will Pass Plus reduce my insurance?

Many insurers offer a discount to drivers with a Pass Plus certificate, but not all of them do and the amount varies. Check with your chosen insurer before booking, and tick the Pass Plus box (or quote your certificate number) when you get quotes. The DVSA website lists participating insurers.

When should I take Pass Plus?

There's no time limit. Many drivers take it soon after passing while their skills are fresh, but you can take it at any time once you've passed your practical test. It's most useful when you'll actually put the skills to use.

Can I do Pass Plus in an automatic car?

Yes. Your Pass Plus certificate is valid whatever the transmission, so if you passed in an automatic you can complete the course in an automatic.

Can I take Pass Plus if I have not passed my test yet?

No — Pass Plus is only available to drivers who have already passed their practical driving test. If you're still learning, see our manual, automatic or intensive driving lessons.

Do you offer Pass Plus across London?
